Empirical Noise is a live performance in which a pianist plays “Moonlight” while wearing a Muse 2 EEG headset. The performer’s brainwave signals feed into image and sound processing, generating abstract noise imagery and introducing distortion, dropouts and detuning into the piano. Jitter and latency remain part of the system, making musical continuity dependent on the recording and processing of bodily signals. The headset simultaneously measures the performer and intervenes in the performance. Presented through two-channel video with sound, the work gives the measuring apparatus an audible and visible presence, exploring how technical observation reshapes the event it records.
