A single body is designated as the reference subject. I photograph a field or object while recording my own frontal EEG. A self-authored protocol translates the recording into image operations, invented indices and reports. The author supplies both the data and the rules by which it is interpreted. Through repeated observation, an individual condition acquires the appearance of a general rule. Its applicability remains unestablished. // Fig.01 Studio installation view.

01. SCOPE One body is placed before a designated field. Authorship is suspended for the duration of observation. What remains may be repeated until it resembles a general rule. The subject may disappear, but the protocol shall retain a reference. — 02. SUBJECT The author is designated as the reference subject. Current sample size: 1. The distinction between author and subject is retained for administrative purposes. — 03. ASSUMPTION A continuous state may be divided. A divided state may be named. A named state may be measured. One body may temporarily support a general rule. — 04. STATUS Universal applicability has not been established. Cross-subject comparison is unavailable. Repetition is not proof. Protocol execution continues. — 05. NOTE The designated field is not consulted. Personal expression has been reassigned as system behaviour.

The recording becomes operational through a sequence of
decisions. Frequency bands are selected, fluctuations smoothed
and thresholds applied. These values govern image operations
within a self-authored protocol.
The running interface places the photograph, processing
parameters and textual determinations within the same field of
view. Each output carries the appearance of a measured
condition, while its categories have been constructed within the
work. The obser ver ’s activity returns as an image that can be
inspected, compared and processed again. The procedure makes
looking available for administration. //Fig.03 Still from the running system.

Provisional readings are assigned index names, arranged in diagrams and entered into reports. Diagnostic language gives each output an administrative status. The report performs an act of authorisation: a condition becomes available for judgement because the system has supplied a category in which to place it.

CIRCULAR ERROR PROBABLE stages a series of aerial drops using balloons filled with dark red pigment. A performer in pale workwear and a protective helmet stands in different outdoor locations. Two channels place an aerial view alongside a ground-level view of the waiting body.
Responding to the circulation of drone -strike footage on social media, the work borrows the visual language of targeting and assessment. Crosshairs, coordinates and status indicators frame each action as a technical procedure. Waiting, deviation and the distribution of pigment complicate the apparent precision of this interface.

After each action, the performer enters a sequence labelled “DAMAGE ASSESSMENT.” As he turns against a plain background, marks on his clothing are presented for inspection and annotation. The body moves from a designated target to an examined subject; the event becomes a record. Borrowing its title from ballistics, the work asks how error is defined and accommodated within a system. Images, assessments and stained garments offer different accounts of the same encounter, examining how the language of precision makes violence appear measurable. The garments retain material traces of the staged actions. Their uneven stains remain available for inspection alongside the interfaces that assign those actions a status. //Fig. 09–12 Pigment-stained garments worn by Ni Tianyu. Four views.

Empirical Noise is a live performance in which a pianist plays “Moonlight” while wearing a Muse 2 EEG headset. The performer’s brainwave signals feed into image and sound processing, generating abstract noise imagery and introducing distortion, dropouts and detuning into the piano. Jitter and latency remain part of the system, making musical continuity dependent on the recording and processing of bodily signals. The headset simultaneously measures the performer and intervenes in the performance. Presented through two-channel video with sound, the work gives the measuring apparatus an audible and visible presence, exploring how technical observation reshapes the event it records.

PHASE ANALYSIS OF CLOUD BEHAVIOR
Three-channel video installation

2024
This three-channel work follows a computational system attempting to detect, segment and track clouds. Tasked with locating and maintaining their edges, the system encounters an object that continually changes shape and visibility. Shifts in light are interpreted as movement; mist is given a boundary. Broken vectors and visual noise accumulate as the analysis continues. Source footage appears alongside these “wrong proofs,” exposing the gap between natural phenomena and their computational description. Each calculation produces another claim to precision, while the clouds remain unstable. The work presents measurement as an ongoing performance of determination, with uncertainty retained in the record.//Fig. 14 Installation render

Everyday scenes are scanned using the iPhone’s built-in LiDAR. The resulting point clouds and meshes are imported into 3D soft ware, where viewpoint, composition and lighting are reassigned. Photographic obser vation continues inside a computational reconstruction.

Holes, bad seams, low-poly surfaces, mismatched normals and textures remain in the image. These defects register the conditions under which the scene became available to the device. Presented as lightboxes, the reconstructions give material presence to an incomplete account. The scene can be
illuminated and inspected; the missing information remains unresolved. Document and simulation occupy the same surface. //Fig. 16 Lightbox presentation. Installation render
